The Song Cycle Dreamworld was commissioned by Rachel Bosanko for Edward Goater and composed in December 2004/January 2005. This cycle is intensely personal and even semi-autobiographic in its combination of playfulness and emotion. The primary influences are Maurice Durufle, Claude Debussy and Lili Boulanger, the underrated French composer whose life was tragically cut short in 1918 at the age of 24. The first song, 'Clair de Lune', creates an impression of dusk and a lover lamenting the loss of past relationships. This is followed by 'Les donneurs de Serenades', with the irregular 5/4 pulse adding humour and energy, culminating in an ecstatic and abrupt conclusion. Next, 'Musique', again encapsulates a dreamy, night time ambience depicting calm, icy moonlight and silent, dark skies. 'Les Roses' refers to the generosity of the human heart. 'Pantomine' depicts the colourful fooling around of young lovers. The music holds back briefly towards the end as Columbine turns in on herself. The final song, 'Nuit d’Etoiles', has a similar melancholic spirit to 'Clair de Lune' except in this instance there is, in the final bars, a coming together and sense of fulfilment that is interpreted in the music by a richly diatonic conclusion in F sharp major.
